Welcome to the homepage of CIS Project!

The Commonwealth of Independent States has become a forgotten area in the last 15 years. As a result of this tendency, the knowledge of these countries has faded. There are not too many people even among the researchers in Hungary who deal with the economic and political problems of the CIS. Two institutes, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences - the Institute for World Economics(VKI) and the Research Institute of Sociology (SZKI) make an effort to) fill this scientific gap with their new so-called CIS-project.

In the framework of the collaboration between the Hungarian Prime Minister's Office and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, together with other strategic research projects, in the summer of 2007 the CIS-project became reality. Its main goals are to follow the most relevant economical, social and political developments in the area and to examine the background of the current events.

The CIS-project deals with the key issues - such as, the perspectives of the region concerning energy issues; the integration and disintegration processes among the CIS states; the formulation of relationship with the European Union and with other important actors worldwide; the effects of world economy in the region. We examine the current social and political changes, the different political systems in parallel with the economic questions.

With our projects we are planning to create an international network for researchers of the Newly Independent States. To reach this aim the first step is to invite external researchers and foreign think-tanks to join us in this project. Currently we are co-operating with our Russian and Ukrainian partners.

Using our homepage you are able to stay current on the results of our project and the events in Hungary concerning the CIS region. You can get to know our researchers and subscribe to our newsletter although it is currently in Hungarian.
